Gareth is a very accomplished and experienced fly fisher, but when he booked his dream trip to Canada, he faced a new challenge: mastering a double-handed rod and learning to Spey cast from scratch.
Ten months before departure, Gareth reached out to Steve to map out a strategy. He didn’t just want to get by on the water—he wanted to add a powerful new skill set to his repertoire for Canada and every season to follow.
So at the start of 2026, we met up for an initial lesson. This focused on some core casting skills with a double handed rod, a practice drill for the month ahead and a development plan in the run up to his Canada fishing trip.
Over the next six months we met up several times to review progress, make adjustments, adding spey casting techniques as appropriate and fine tune equipment according to his goals for this particular trip. Gareth followed the practice plan, working on a little and often basis between scheduled casting lessons with Steve.
The preparation was an extension of the fishing trip itself, which made it fun for everyone involved! It also meant when Gareth finally stepped onto Canadian riverbanks, there was no second-guessing—only muscle memory. The images tell part of the story, but only part. The quiet confidence of knowing exactly where your fly needs to land, laying it down with effortless precision, and feeling the sheer adrenaline when that reel starts to scream. That’s the feeling of a cast executed flawlessly.
Every year we help many people like Gareth with their spey casting requirements. So whether you plan to fish international or home waters, chase salmon, sea trout, steelhead or want to use spey casting skills for other species, trout, pike, etc. Get in touch for a chat about your requirements and how we can help you.
