Both socially and through our work, we meet many people who remark that “fly fishing is on their bucket list of things to do in retirement”. While fly fishing is something you can do throughout life and to a high standard in later years, waiting, might see you miss out on some truly golden opportunities. Let me explain with one example from my own experience.
In my early twenties, I had two destination fly fishing trips I wanted to do. One was New Zealand to sight fish to the big brown trout, the other was to chase really big king salmon in Alaska. While I spent many weeks collectively in NZ, I never took the trip to Alaska. The great irony is, I could go to NZ now and chase those big browns still. Those really big kings in Alaska however, have almost completely disappeared. It never crossed my mind back then!
So the number one reason to go fly fishing now, whether that means starting to fly fish and/or making a special trip, chasing a specific species, etc, is it might not be there in future! Environmental changes around the world may have effects that are yet to have their ultimate outcome.

Health is another factor to consider and it does not need to be a big issue either. While we can say, none of us knows how long our life will be for sure. Eye sight quality, will have a huge impact on what is practicable in your fly fishing, even more so with the passage of time. Does poorer eye sight mean you can’t go fly fishing? NO. It’s as simple as tying knots takes longer, subtle takes go unnoticed, so you miss out on some windows of opportunity when waterside.

You might not be physically able access wilder waters or concentrate for as long. All these things reduce your options and catches, they don’t mean you can’t catch/fish, nor do they mean you can’t have fun trying. It’s just something to consider ahead of time.
Time is the factor. We all quote “I don’t have enough time” or some version of it. In reality, we do have time. It’s all about how we use it, what are our priorities?
The question is, “What fly fishing experience do I want to do now?”. When you answer that, we will be right here to help you prepare!
Thanks for reading, we hope it helps you!
