It’s early March, we’ve run our initial beginners fly fishing course of 2026 and guided our final grayling trip of winter. With the best months of 2026 ahead, we anticipate continued good sport on lakes and the start of our 2026 river trout season.
Early spring fishing often has much in common with winter fishing until water temperatures rise a little. So the same nymph and streamer fishing techniques are currently working well. Over the past couple of weeks sparse hatches of midges and olives have encouraged the occasional fish to rise, though this has been little more than a taster of things to come.
Stillwater fishing has been dominated by mini lures, bloodworm, buzzers fished on floating and various sinking lines according to the volatile weather conditions. Very little winter fishing on rivers this year, due to high water levels until recently. The key has been covering a lot of good holding water. With fish podded up, many great looking lies are vacant. Rarely is your fly the issue at this time if it resembles caddis larvae or shrimp and is heavy enough to get to the riverbed.
We look forward to seeing many people again this year, both familiar and new faces!🙂
