April beginners success

April showers bring forth May’s flowers they say, well I’m looking forward to May then! Despite mixed weather we worked with  many clients  of varied experience throughout April, helping them enjoy the benefits of fly fishing.

The lakes are providing superb sport to both streamers and more so nymphs such as buzzers, crunchers, PTN, HE, etc. During the last few days of April conditions warmed a little more and we enjoyed some top water sport with dry flies as the first falls of hawthorn fly occurred. A few spring crane flies are about too, supplementing large buzzer hatches. Looking to May a few olives will appear along with Mayflies, when nymph and dry fly fishing are superb fun.

Beautiful early season river brown trout.

River fishing during April has been impacted by the cold winds and higher than normal water. However everyone joining us riverside has enjoyed the opportunity to improve nymph fishing skills, which have produced 90% of fish caught. As April came to a close the fish were starting to keep an eye on the surface and feeding there for at least an hour or so most days. What’s important now is what is to come. Increasing fly hatches throughout May, increasing levels of trout activity and great opportunities to learn and have fun!

We look forward to welcoming you waterside!
