While around half of January was a right off due to weather conditions, the remaining half produced some good fishing and coaching opportunities. A few days provided conditions PM, where a midge hatch really had the trout feeding high in the water and on a couple of occasions, at the surface. During such periods a simple combination of parachute dry or F fly with a small dark buzzer, fished duo style, produced well. In fact, we had 2 fish to the dry fly in January, great fun. We love watching peoples faces the first time they see a trout eat there fly, the reaction is awesome!
During spells of less clement weather, fish came steadily to streamer tactics and a combination of lure and nymph, using various lines. Plenty of variety, which is good for gaining experience of techniques.
Right now it’s early February. Fishing is more of the same, if anything, it’s feeling a touch warmer overall (that could be an elusion of positive thinking😁). Aside from the fishing opportunities right now, February is a great time to prepare for the year ahead. Check equipment and book a lesson to tune up your skills if it’s been a while since you hit the water. For anyone new to fly fishing, the hot tip is, start now, it’s much better than summer!
