Fishing Reports

Fly fisher releasing a wild brown trout on the Derbyshire Wye in May.

Our river and lake fly fishing just kept improving throughout May. Right now it’s mayfly time on the rivers here, everyone is excited about catching trout on dry flies and rightly so, it’s great fun and a tremendous opportunity to catch a big trout from the surface! River fishing has finally caught up with where it should be, after recent warm conditions, the flora, fly life and fish are behaving like its early summer rather than late winter. We experience good dry fly fishing most days with a little effort and patience. Mayflies, shuttlecocks, F flies and parachutes in various sizes and colours are doing the trick.

Stillwater fishing was a little tougher during the recent heat than it had been all month. With cooler, overcast conditions forecast for the beginning of June, expect fishing to take a positive upturn, with various nymphs and dry flies being very effective. Buzzers in black, damsel, mayfly, cruncher and hares ear nymphs. Dries to try are shuttlecocks, mayflies, crane flies and F flies.

Lots of courses, events, lessons and guided days planned for June, with some availability remaining for those of you looking for a last minute opportunity.
