Fishing jumped from winter to summer conditions, not for the first time and so did our tactics in order to be successful. Basically we scaled everything back gear wise, to fish lighter and smaller on both lake and river, with exceptions on some days.
River fishing meant low clear water, seeing fish you are trying to catch, then targeting them mainly with dry flies. Nymphs being a backup for stubborn fish unwilling to feed at the surface and for when clients wanted to learn various nymph fishing techniques. To us it’s the best fishing when river conditions are like this and a great learning opportunity too. The question is are you up for the challenge?😉
Similarly many anglers missed out on good lake fishing during the heat wave. More days than not trout have spent a good portion of the day feeding at the surface or not far below it. Dries and nymphs have out fished lures eight out of ten days. Just as conditions might have been getting close to too warm, cooler weather and rain refreshed things.
Mayfly are in play on both lake and river right now, along with a bunch of terrestrial bugs. Damsels are really active on the lakes as are buzzer hatches. On the river it’s an explosion of life, with caddis, upwings aplenty and stoneflies. Looking forward to some great sport in June!🙂
Hope to see you waterside.
