Three Spring fly fishing tips, a practical checklist!

Fly Fishing Tips

Spring river fishing

Spring, the traditional start of trout season and a great time to go fly fishing. Whether you are on lake or river, try incorporating these three fly fishing tips into your time waterside, to make fishing more productive!

1 Carry 2 rods. Spring conditions are notoriously volatile and windows of opportunity can be small. For river fishing have a subsurface and surface setup ready to rock (e.g. nymph and dry fly rigs).

On stillwaters a general approach is to have your two outfits to cover higher and lower in the water column. For example a floating line on one rod and an intermediate on another. During colder, rougher weather this may change to an intermediate and a sink 3, for example.

2 Be adaptable. Read point 1 again, note they are just examples. If it’s not working change something.

3 Black and olive flies factor a lot in spring fishing. Have plenty. Also have some exhibiting hot spots. When there is colour in the water or a lot of food, a hotspot helps fish see your fly.

Have fun!
