Late summer and a large part of autumn see daddy long legs or crane flies appear in numbers. They are a substantial piece of protein and become highly available to trout, especially when a good wind blows them from surrounding grassland and waterside shrubbery. While fishing them traditionally as a dry fly or wet, dead drifted and twitched catches well, we are always keen to present alternatives that work. In the excellent video above, top angler Kelly Galloup walks you a through a more aggressive way to offer your daddy/crane flies this autumn.
Don’t think you need to be in a drift boat or even on a river to make this work. We’ve enjoyed great success on lakes and rivers of all sizes using variations of this approach from bank and boat over the years. It also works with other large dries such as caddis, beetles (check out this video) and in the spring, Mayflies.
